U.S. Baseball Players Contract 61-Year-Old Childhood Disease
“Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease” (HFMD) was first seen more than 60 years
ago in Canada and New Zealand. In the twentieth and twenty-first centuries it
is said to be found “mostly in East and South East Asia, primarily affecting
children.”
In China, more than a million HFMD cases were reported annually in the years
2008-2014.

revention
Since the end of 2015, a prevention vaccine, “EV71,” has been available in
the People’s Republic of China. It is not available in the United States.
The U.S. State of Alabama in 2012 reportedly experienced “an outbreak
of an unusual type of” Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease” (HFMD), occurring “in a
season when it is not usually seen and (affecting) teenagers and older adults”;
and causing “some hospitalizations.”

revalence
Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease, “more common in rural areas than urban
areas,” is also linked to “socioeconomic status and hygiene levels,” poor
hygiene being “a factor for HFMD.” Its most common occurrence is said to be “in
children under the age of 10”— since 1997, “71 large enterovirus outbreaks
reported mostly in East and South East Asia primarily affecting children.”
Outbreaks usually occur in spring, summer, and autumn months, heat and
humidity enabling spread of the disease.

This issue got my attention because of July and August reports from the
Major League Baseball world.
New York Yankee pitcher J.A. Happ (age 35) and New York Mets pitcher Noah
Syndergaard (age 25) reportedly have been diagnosed this summer with Hand, Foot
and Mouth Disease.
