Final Curtain Applause for a Diva

She prefers the humbler “Song Stylist” after a half-century performance

REMEMBERING with love

T

his daughter of a Chillicothe, Ohio, iron foundry worker and a maid intuitively knew when she was four years old that she would become a professional singer.

During those very early years she sang in church choirs and performed for the family, imitating her great idols.

Around the age of 16, she “auditioned and won a spot with (jazz tenor and alto saxophonist) Rusty Bryant’s Carolyn Club Big Band.” She toured with the band “throughout Canada and the Midwest,” and “made her first recording under Dot Records.”

And from then on—through more than five decades — “song stylist” Nancy Sue Wilson sang in studios and clubs and on stages all over the world. She “recorded more than 70 albums and won three Grammys.

Some have complimented her “the consummate actress”; others described her as “the complete entertainer.”

N

ancy Wilson (February 20, 1937 – December 13, 2018) is an American treasure and an international inspiration.
