A Different TIME, a Different TONE

A Time and Tone that Recognized World Nations and Cultures, Understood and Embraced Multilateralism, Respectfully Engaged all Peoples of the world

One world leader and
head of state
comes to mind:
Dr. Angela Merkel.

“… We want to collaborate in peace and friendship with all the other countries of the world.”
“In all our interests, we will gear our policy to human rights, to more prosperity, and to advancement—FOR US ALL” (emphasis in caps added) said the former Federal Chancellor of Germany Angela Merkel addressing ambassadors from every corner of the world.

TO Eurasia
(approx. 36 percent of the Earth’s land area)—situated in the Northern and Eastern Hemispheres and comprising (a) the two most populous countries in the world (China and India); and (b) several of the world’s largest economies (e.g., China, Japan, Germany, Russia, and India):

“We traditionally enjoy close relations with our neighbours—an obvious example is Ukraine” and, of course, “Russia …also stands out most prominently. … I can tell you that collaboration with Russia, on the part of the EU, as well as Germany in particular” — “will remain a major priority.”

TO East Asia
Looking toward an approaching trip to the People’s Republic of China, she said,

“We will discuss German-Chinese cooperation.” With India “We have also launched intergovernmental consultations …. As you can see, we keep putting one foot in front of the other.…”

TO Western Asia:

“(We are) … saddened … that little to no progress seems possible—or at least has been possible—on the Middle East conflict. Germany will be continuing to campaign for a two-state solution with Israel as a Jewish state and another state for the Palestinians. We will keep working hard on that.”
“… [T]here are sure to be complicated processes ahead. … No matter which country you should care to name, we will do our bit to advance its development.

“It is our hope that human rights will be respected…, and we are right behind the Arab League in everything it is doing in that regard.”

TO South Asia
(Afghanistan): Addressing the “Government of Afghanistan,” she said,

“It is our intention to complete the transfer of responsibility for security in the near future. We stand by that plan. … I believe that Afghanistan (desires) to stand on its own two feet. We will also support the reconciliation process wherever we can.”

TO Africa:

“We are glad to see that there have been various favourable developments in Africa, our neighbouring continent.… The partnership between the EU and the African Union is very important to us. I can promise the AU that we will carry on at its side this coming year. … People in Europe often think that it is only here that there’s always an election on – but it is just the same in Africa.”

Present leaders, ghostly shadows: Genius declares No more Walls

aniel Barenboim and Beethoven's Fifth

Ludwig van Beethoven’s “importance in music has been principally defined by the revolutionary nature of his compositions” — Beethoven “freed music from hitherto prevailing conventions of harmony and structure.”
The world says to human beings “‘Do not stick to the old ways; learn to think anew,’” which is “what musicians do every day.” [Quotes attributed to Barenboim]
Barenboim
South American-born Daniel Barenboim (KBE) is a world-renown pianist and conductor who began studying piano at the age of five and at seven “gave his first formal concert in his hometown, Buenos Aires.” He later studied harmony and composition with Nadia Boulanger in Paris.

Much, much later Barenboim is an acclaimed “musical genius, pianist, conductor and author”; also “lauded as the savior of the Berlin Staatsoper; founder of an important music academy, humanist, peacemaker and one of the most influential musicians in the world.”

He conducted Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony at this year’s celebration of the Fall of the Berlin Wall.

L
udwig van Beethoven

“The true artist is not proud: he unfortunately sees that art has no limits; he feels darkly how far he is from the goal, and though he may be admired by others, he is sad not to have reached that point to which his better genius only appears as a distant, guiding sun.”
“The barriers are not erected which can say to aspiring talents and industry, ‘Thus far and no farther.’” [Quotes attributed to Beethoven]
Of Beethoven and his Fifth and the Ninth
Bonn, Germany-born composer and pianist, Ludwig van Beethoven is one of the greatest composers of all time.
At age 31, 26 years before his death Beethoven began to lose his hearing but he “continued to conduct” and in 1804 and 1808 respectively, he conducted the first performances of his “Third and Fifth symphonies.” By 1811 he was almost completely deaf.
The story has been told and confirmed that after conducting the premiere of his Ninth Symphony, Beethoven, hearing nothing, “had to be turned round to see the audience’s tumultuous applause.
During the Cold War-divided Germany at the Olympic Games for the United Team of Germany (1956-1968), the “Ode to Joy” segment of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony was played instead of a national anthem. The Council of Europe in 1972 and later the European Communities (now the European Union) in 1985 adopted the “Ode to Joy” instrumentation (without the words) as the Anthem of Europe.
G
erman President Frank-Walter Steinmeier
Brandenburg Gate, Berlin, Saturday November 9, 2019, speaking a crowd
“This evening, we stand here with gratitude (and) with tears in our eyes.”
“This massive wall, this inhuman structure that claimed so many lives, is no longer standing. This wall is gone, once and for all”
But new walls have been constructed…
… “Walls of frustration,
walls of anger and hatred;
walls of speechlessness and alienation;
walls that are invisible but still divide;
walls that stand in the way of our cohesion.
Frank-Walter Steinmeier
Detmold, West Germany born of Polish and German parents one a carpenter, one a refugee (“during the flight and expulsion of Germans after World War II”) from a Lutheran part of Silesia, a historical region of Central Europe located mostly in Poland, with small parts in the Czech Republic and Germany.
Steinmeier is a veteran public servant: current President of Germany (March 19, 2017 -); former  Minister for Foreign Affairs (2005- 2009; 2013 -2017); Vice-Chancellor of Germany (2007-2009); chairman-in-office of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe, OSCE (2016). G
erman Chancellor Angela Merkel
Saturday November 9, 2019, speaking at the Chapel of Reconciliation
“I remember those who were killed at this wall because they were seeking liberty”
“We want to ensure that no wall will separate people ever again.”
“The Berlin Wall is history, which teaches us this:
“No wall that segregates people and limits freedom
is so high or so wide
that it can’t be broken through.”
 Angela Merkel
Born of Polish (mother, a teacher) and German (father, a Lutheran pastor) parents first in Hamburg (West Germany) then in infancy to East Germany, Angela Dorothea Kasner Merkel is a veteran public official and current Chancellor of Germany (2005 -), lauded as “de facto leader of the European Union, “the most powerful woman in the world,”  and “leader of the free world.”

Moments of Reflection in red, white and blue

C
ommemorations instead of lolling and idling us in the past can push us forward — past walls, over and beyond walls — together.

Surely Americans are able to distinguish sense from nonsense, shallowness from depth, con artists from artists, and geniuses from jacklegs.

The shallow among us
are deficient in natural talent, in genius.
They spend their lives
hoarding, wasting and destroying
wealth and resources of mountains and mankind.
Their toxicity robs, blames and
defames the living in all of its forms.
Their congenital, perverse egoism renders them
incapable of offering anything of true value to the world.

An Honorable Servant has Served an Era

A leader with grace, heart, earned accomplishments,  commanding presence with principle, unparalleled competence — “Kasi”

Hamburg-born daughter of a preacher and a teacher, her childhood nickname “Kasi,” Angela Dorothea Merkel’s (née Kasner) political career extends from the eve of German unification, through unification, and on —into the Chancellorship of Germany, outstanding leadership of a party and a Continent.

On March 26, 2014, Chancellor “Merkel became the longest-serving incumbent head of government in the European Union.” In the 2017 election, “she led her party to victory for the fourth time” (currently the “senior G7 leader”).

G

erman Chancellor (2005 - ) Merkel “has been widely described as the ‘de facto leader of the European Union,’ ‘the most powerful woman in the world,’ and ‘the leader of the Free World.’” In 2007, she was President of the European Council. In October 2018, she announced her intention not to seek reelection as leader of her party.

Angela Merkel completes her term as German Chancellor in 2021.

Along the way she has picked up scores of awards, honors and honorary degrees. She holds earned degrees from the German Academy of Sciences-Berlin (Ph.D.) and Leipzig University. Dr. Merkel is multi-lingual (fluent in Russian), proficient in Mathematics and physics.

I

nexplicably, the current U.S. president has taken every opportunity to rebuff wisdom and schooling when offered, even if ever so gently. And he has managed to insult numerous national leaders including Chancellor Merkel.

The U.S. will fall on its entrenched, arrogant incompetence. One of the latest illustrations is this:
U.S. President Donald Trump, who rose to the U.S. presidency, from a pack of variously unfit contenders, with absolutely no diplomatic or foreign relations credentials or experience has nominated another incompetent—a TV personality (not unlike him but no doubt with fewer $ holdings) to replace the previous personality with an accounting degree and no qualifications for international relations work—to represent the United States at the United Nations.
S

howing off her ignorance and ineptitude
  • April 2018, the nominee “voiced support for Saudi Arabian-led (U.S. aided) intervention in Yemen, reportedly condemning “‘Iran’s malign influence’ in Yemen.”
  • May 2018, the nominee responded to “the Gaza border protests” by saying “‘We oppose actions against Israel at the International Criminal Court (…) because it does not help the cause for peace.’”
  • July 2018, the nominee “noted that the anniversary of the Invasion of Normandy and the long U.S. relationship since the Marshall Plan provided evidence of a strong ties between the United States and Germany.’”
NOTE
Normandy is located on the northern coast of France where on June 6, 1944, “Western Allies of World War II launched the largest amphibious invasion in history.”
NOTE
A four-year post-war U.S. initiative to aid Western Europe in rebuilding their economies, the “Marshall Plan” or “European Recovery Program” (ERP), begun April 3, 1948 handed out the greater share to Britain (26 percent of the $12 billion), then to France (18 percent), and then West Germany (11 percent).
In the same news period that Chancellor Merkel passes her party leadership baton (December 7, 2018), President Trump announces he is nominating Heather Nauert to be U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, filling the spot left vacant by Nikki Haley. Nauert, “a former TV star,” has “limited” (read ZERO) “diplomatic experience.”

T

he world is in serious trouble, in large part because of U.S. policies and actions; and a U.S. President proposes sending a TV personality to represent the United States in a world body. If the members of the U.S. Senate and House want to better serve the United States and the world, they will reject this one. But very likely they will not. And so goes the decline and fall of United States of America.

R

eturn briefly to some words of a Chancellor with unparalleled Grace
“I wasn’t born chancellor or party chair. I always wanted to bear my offices with dignity and to give them up with dignity.”
Facing a “humanitarian catastrophe” and reflecting on her response to floods of migrants fleeing conflict and war, she asks, “How could it have been different?” We are, after all, “family.”
The turn of an era, a new chapter begins. For her, she said, it has been “an honor” to serve.
Neither the leadership nor the country of Angela Dorothea Merkel (née Kasner) is in decline or defeat. The same cannot be said for the land that I love.
